He's hooked on the rush of it and the movie makes the audience if not sympathise, at least understand why it can happen. Sandler's character is, quite simply, a gambling addict. Here, the Safdie Brothers balance it beautifully and actually gives it some kind of emotional context. Too often movies about gambling to this level rely on either painfully simple explanations of the events - to the point that it slows everything down - or that it makes itself deliberately confusing. The true skill in 'Uncut Gems', however, is that while it's all so chaotic and so desperate, you're never once unsure of what's happening, where it's happening, and why it's happening. The Safdie Brothers' script is littered with expletives, instantly quotable one-liners, and the kind of frantic cross-talk that you only get with crime movies of this kind. This, in a way, is what's so frustrating about Sandler's career in general - when he wants to, he can do incredible work and 'Uncut Gems' is the most recent example of it.
It's every bit as wired, crazed, and dogged as anything Scorsese made in his early career, but done with a level of panache and incredible force of personality that it propels itself past that obvious comparison.Īdam Sandler gives what is truly the best performance of his career in this, playing Howard Ratner with a level of understanding and commitment that puts him into the running for a Best Actor category. Now imagine that level of sustained panic, tension and energy sprawled out for a full-length movie. Imagine the final twenty minutes of Martin Scorsese's 'Goodfellas', with Ray Liotta's character coked up to the hilt and rattling through dialogue as he keeps checking the sky for helicopters.

It won’t be for everyone, of course, but nothing ever is.Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) is a successful New York jeweler and a compulsive gambler who spirals into a series of debts and bets, one of which involves NBA player Kevin Garnett (himself), all while trying to balance his failing marriage and his own demons. Still, it’s easy to recommend Rough Diamonds for the reasons above its cultural specificity, nuance, detail, and impressive construction are all points in its favor. Judicious editing would have surely made for a better six-episode season than the eight-episode one we get. But it’s also inarguably poorly paced, with a droopy middle portion that it can be difficult to sit through. In that sense, Rough Diamonds certainly stands out.Īmong this, though, are much more universally understood themes of family, loss, grief, and trauma the human relationships at the show’s core at not alien, but deeply felt and easily understood, and the central metaphor of the diamond, a symbol of great beauty and prosperity that is nonetheless backdropped by a gritty and dangerous underworld, is clear in its implications.Įven on a formal level, Rough Diamonds is solid enough, boasting impressive performances and a well-constructed overarching narrative.
Scarcely a week goes by without another international crime drama landing on the platform, and it is perhaps the greatest advantage any of them can possess to stand out in one way or another.
The show’s Israeli creators, Rotem Shamir and Yuval Yefet, have an eye for detail that immerses the viewer in a very specific place, among very specific company, and this nuance provides a captivating backdrop for a well-heeled entertainment genre – especially among streamers like Netflix. Noah left both the country and the orthodoxy for a criminal life abroad, but his responsibilities to the family’s business and legacy begin to supersede his own personal ambitions and the differences he still has with his siblings and culture. The show’s plot is kick-started by the suicide of the youngest son of the Wolfson family, a tragedy that summons his estranged brother, Noah, back home. It’s also a bit slow, but more on that in a minute.

It explores an ultra-Orthodox Jewish family through the prison of Antwerp, the world’s diamond capital, and across eight episodes weaves a story of family, crime, and culture that is full of detail and nuance. Even at a glance, there’s an element of novelty and specificity to Rough Diamonds on Netflix that definitely benefits it.
